Alcatel is a French company that makes telecommunications transmission equipment, including multiplexers and fiber optic terminal equipment and integrated circuits. The business is most notably known for its GSM telephones and its ADSL modems, but also for its submarine transmission cables.

Its subsidiary, Alcatel Space is a leading builder of satellite systems with its Geosynchronous spacecraft platform, Spacebus 3000 and 4000, and its LEO spacecraft platform, Proteus.

The current CEO (2004) is Serge Tchuruk.

There is two named actions "Alcatel" quoted to the Paris stock exchange: the action Alcatel was part of the CAC 40, the action Alcatel O concerns the entity Alcatel Optronics.

The name "Alcatel" comes from a small telephone company, "Alsace Cable and Telephony".
