Synthesis
Aldols can be formed in aldol reactions.
Synthesis of aldols occurs by the attack of enolate ions on the carbonyl function of an aldehyde. A general example of this would be the addition of a dilute NaOH (aq) to ethanal (acetaldehyde). The product of this reaction would be 3-hydroxybutanal or an aldol. The term aldol is derived from ALDehyde and alcohOL. The reactions are called aldol condensations. Ketones can also partake in this reaction and it can also occur intramolecularly.
