An amphora is a kind of tall plain, unglazed, ceramic storage container, with two handles, mostly pointed at the bottom, used for transportation and storage of goods.

Used from antiquity, typically around the Mediterranean, until the 16th century or so. Used for wine, oil, olives, grain, fish, and other commodities. Amphoras in a shipwreck can often tell the age and nationality of the wreck.
