The basal ganglia is a part of the brain associated with the ability to carry out willed movements, and is therefore important in motor planning. The basal ganglia comprises the following areas of the brain: the striatum (consisting of the caudate nucleus and putamen), the globus pallidus, the substantia nigra, and the subthalamic nucleus.
