Bunny Tsukino

Bunny Tsukino (月野うさぎ Tsukino Usagi), a.k.a. Sailor Moon, is the main, and title character in the anime/manga Sailor Moon. In the English anime dub, she is known as Serena Tsukino.

Bunny Tsukino's name is a pun on the phrase "The Rabbit in the Moon" (Tsuki no Usagi). This is based on the fact that while Westerners see a face on the surface of the Moon, the Japanese see a rabbit. The pun is obvious to Japanese who are told the story of "The Rabbit in the Moon" as children. The TokyoPop manga translated "Usagi" to "Bunny", slang for a rabbit, to keep the pun in the English manga. Bunny's English dubbed name, "Serena" is a play on the word Selene, a moon goddess in Greek Mythology who fell in love with a shepherd called Endymion. The Roman Mythology equivalent to Selene is Luna.

She is portrayed wearing a traditional Japanese school uniform. In the story, she is your average stereotype-breaker: An underachieving, slacker Japanese schoolgirl. One day, as Bunny was running off to school, she saw some punk neighborhood kids abusing a cat. After rescuing the cat, who is actually known by the name of Luna, an agent from a long-dead lunar civilization known as the "Silver Millennium", the cat gives her a magical device that allows Bunny to transform into the "soldier for love and justice", known as Sailor Moon.

Bunny lives at home with her mother Ikuko Tsukino, her father Kenji Tsukino and her brother Sammy Tsukino (Shingo Tsukino). These characters were named after the real-life family of the metaseries' creator, Naoko Takeuchi. Compared to the other main characters, she seems to be the only one with a conventional family without emotional issues (Mina Aino (Minako Minako) possibly notwithstanding) and the only senshi with a sibling.

One of the biggest secrets about Sailor Moon is revealed in a number of connecting episodes in the end of the first series when she realizes that she is Princess Serenity (the "crown princess" of the Silver Millennium) reborn. In the second series, Usagi realizes that she will give birth to a daughter by Darien Shields (Mamoru Chiba), Rini (ChibiUsa), and she will become a "sovereign of the Earth", known as Neo-Queen Serenity, in the 30th century.

• In the English dubbed version, Serena is played by Tracey Moore (episodes 1-11, 13, 21 and 41), Terri Hawkes (episodes 12, 14-20, 22-40, 42-82, and movies) and Linda Ballantyne (episodes 90-166). Hawkes is considered by most fans to be the "definitive" English-language voice of the character, due in large part to her professional embrace of the role and of the series's fandom.
