CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) was created by DARPA in November 1988 after the Morris Worm struck. It is a major coordination center in dealing with Internet security problems.

CERT is run out by the federally funded Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University. The SEI also created the Capability Maturity Model (CMM). This CERT is not to be confused with US-CERT which is part of the USA government Department of Homeland Security. US-CERT stands for Computer Emergency Readiness Team. The two organisations work closely together and cross reference each other.

A CERT is also a community emergency response team, created by FEMA to act in mass emergencies.

The expression "cert" is also an abbreviation for an American legal term, certiorari.
