CICS
CICS (Customer Information Control System) is a transaction server that runs on IBM Mainframe systems under MVS, z/OS or DOS/VSE.CICS is a transaction processing system, which can be called online transaction processing. CICS is needed with operating systems like OS/390 and VSE/ESA because these operating systems were designed to run batch programs, not online programs.
CICS is one of the world's oldest software products still in use today. Originally released under the PU (Public Utility) CICS name in 1968, it was one of the first mainframe products and was made publicly purchaseable on July 8, 1969. CICS is still used heavily in the financial sector, continuously evolving to take advantage of new technologies as they emerge - Java and web services being the most recent. It is reported that over 90% of the Fortune 500 companies use CICS.
