Carinthia (duchy)
Carinthia (German Kärnten) was a duchy of the Holy Roman Empire until its dissolution in 1806, and a crownland of Austria-Hungary until it dissolved in 1918. In the 7th century it was part of the Principality of Khorushka, and was part of the empire of Charlemagne from 788 to 843, when it became part of East Francia. From 889 to 927 it was part of Bavaria before passing to the Holy Roman Empire.
Following the Carinthian Plebiscite on October 10, 1920, a small portion was taken from Austria handed over to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, today in Slovenia. Comment: As the map below shows, the Plebiscite did not cover the areas of Carinthia now part of Slovenia, namely the fomer "Miestal" and the area arround Slovenj Gradec (German Windisch Gratz). I think these were simply annected by the SHS kingdom as a consequence of the St. Germain treaty.
Carinthia is now a federal state of Austria, while the Slovenian Carinthia (Slovenian Koroška) is a province in Slovenia. Also the Canal Valley/Kanalska dolina in Italy around Tarvisio/TrbiÃÂ belonged to this duchy.
