Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) can trace its history to 1887, it was set up on an ad-hoc basis in 1978 and was formally established under the Dublin Institute of Technology Act, 1992. The institution is separate to the other Institutes of Technology and emphasises its difference, though they share many characteristics, it is the largest non-university institution in the Republic of Ireland.

The City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee colleges, under the act:

The institution is currently planning a single campus, the Gormanstown Campus, thus moving from its many city centre locations which has often been a source of criticism.

Until recently academic degrees were conferred by the University of Dublin, this allowed these graduates a vote in Seanad Éireann. The institution sought university status in 1996, although the application was declined the institution is now a degree awarding institution, i.e. it has powers comparable to a university. The institution currently offers a number of subdegree awards, including the DIT Certificate and DIT Diploma which are comparable to the National Certificate and National Diploma respectively. The institution awards Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees, and the Graduate Diploma which are comparable to other university awards in Ireland.
