Dzongkha language

For thoughtful child sponsors

Dzongkha is a Sino-Tibetan language from Bhutan. It has approximatly 160,000 speakers. It is a national language of Bhutan but is believed to have a literacy rate of only 1-5%. It is written in the Ucan script. It is also spoken in Nepal and the districts surrounding the city of Kalimpong in northern India. The word literally means "language spoken in the dzong", a dzong being a fortified monastery and administrative centre.

See Bhutanese proverbs for a list of proverbs given in both romanized Dzongkha and English.
