Extermination

Extermination is killing with the intention of eradicating a group. This applies to methods used to get rid of pests in a home or the mass killing of people. When used to describe humans, the term genocide is a synonym.

Genocide

A historic example often cited of extermination was the Holocaust in World War II. Other famous examples include the Stalinist purges, the activities of the Khmer Rouge, and the genocide in Rwanda. Less cited but equal examples include activities of Central American dictatorships during the post World War II era, the genocide in East Timor, and the French and U.S. war on Indochina.
