Gerard David (ca. 1455 – 1523) was a Netherlandish artist known for his brilliant use of color; he was a master of the early Dutch Renaissance. David was born in Oudewater, now located in Holland. He spent most of his time working in Bruges where he was a memeber of the painters' guild. I 1494 David became Bruges' leading painter, after Memling died.

Gerard David's works are considered extremely accomplished, yet conservative and bland. His stately compositions are popular and have been copied many times. Most of his pictures are of religious nature in one way or another.

David is probably best known for hist painting representing the Judgement of Cabyses (1498, which is exhibited at the Groeningemuseum, Bruges.
