Glengormley

Glengormley is a suburb on the north-western edge of the city of Belfast in Northern Ireland.

Taking its name from the Irish Gaelic gleann gorm liath, meaning "the blue grey glen", the original settlement grew up around a junction of the road linking Belfast with Antrim and Ballyclare.

Glengormley is part of the borough of Newtownabbey.

Famous inhabitants

• Sadie Lee - reputedly the first woman in Ireland to ride a motorbike, she is alleged to have had a 'fling' with Al Jolson during a visit by him to Belfast in the 1920s. Well into her 90s, she ran a tumbledown sweet-shop on the Carnmoney Road until her death in the 1980s.
• Actor Stephen Boyd (1931-1977) - starred in Fantastic Voyage (1966) and some 50 other films (none of them blockbusters), born in Glengormley
• Stíobhart Matulevicz - singer with punk band "Nobody's Heroes" grew up in Glengormley.
• Roy Mason - Irish painter who produced an acclaimed series of 'Troubles' paintings while a Glengormley resident.
• Writer Padraic O'Fiacc lived in Glengormley
• Derek Mahon - Irish poet who lived in Glengormley. One of his best-known poems is entitled "Glengormley".
