Griffith Park
Griffith Park is a large park situated in the rolling hills between Burbank and Los Angeles:
Initially making his money in mining, Col. Griffith Jenkins Griffith created his Ostrich Farm in 1882, located near the Los_Angeles_River. Although ostrich feathers were a popular aspect of the millenary trade in the late 1800s, GJG created his Ostrich Farm primarily to lure residents of Los Angeles out to the property developments he owned in the area. After the property rush peaked, and supposedly spooked by the ghost of Antonio Feliz (a previous owner of the property) he donated 3015 acres (12 km²) to the city of Los Angeles in 1896. Col. Griffith then became better known for delusionally shooting at his high-society wife; when he was later released from prison (and divorced) he funded the building of an observatory and planetarium (completed in 1935) and outdoor amphitheatre on the site.
Today, in addition to the Griffith Observatory and Greek Amphitheatre, Griffith park hosts the Los Angeles Zoo, the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, two golf courses, TravelTown, a Merry-Go-Round, the Hollywood Sign, and many hiking trails.
