Irondequoit is a town located in Monroe County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 52,354. Irondequoit is a major suburb of Rochester, New York, lying north of the city.

In 1682 Marquis Denonville led an army of French soldiers and Huron warriors on a punitive expedition against the Iroquois through Irondequoit Bay, beginning the long enmity between the Iroquois and the French. After the American Revolution, this area was part of the Phelps-Gorham Purchase. The Town of Irondequoit was founded in 1839.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 43.6 km² (16.8 mi²). 39.3 km² (15.2 mi²) of it is land and 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.69% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 52,354 people, 22,247 households, and 14,327 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,330.7/km² (3,447.4/mi²). There are 23,037 housing units at an average density of 585.6 persons/km² (1,516.9 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.03% White, 3.55% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.98% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 3.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 22,247 households out of which 26.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 35.6% are non-families. 30.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 85.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $45,276, and the median income for a family is $55,493. Males have a median income of $41,463 versus $30,937 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,638. 5.4% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.6% are under the age of 18 and 6.8% are 65 or older.
