K-Y jelly
K-Y jelly is a water based, water soluble personal lubricant manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. The initials "K-Y" do not represent any words and were chosen only for their marketing value.Created in 1917, the lubricant's popularity began with medical use, where it was often chosen by doctors because of its natural base. In contrast with petroleum based lubricants, KY is generally biologically inert and contains no colour or perfume additives. The lubricant proved extremely popular as it does not stain and is easily cleaned up.
The lubricant (or lube) is now more widely used during sexual activity. It does not react with latex condoms or silicone based Sex Toys. It has a thick consistency and a tendency to dry out during use, but can be 'reactivated' by the addition of saliva or more water.
K-Y jelly is not a contraceptive and does not prevent pregnancy or stop sexually transmitted diseases.
The company also manufactures K-Y Liquid and K-Y ULTRAGEL.
