Kananaskis is situated about 80km west of Calgary, Alberta in the foothills and front ranges of the Canadian Rockies.

There are many recreational activities in this area, including skiing, hiking, mountain biking, scrambling, climbing (trad climbing alpine climbing sport climbing) and backpacking.

There is some development in the park, including a golf course, some hotels, two ski resorts (one the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics and built specifically for it) a holiday ranch, two gas stations and a village near Kananaskis Lakes.

The Eastern border of the park abuts the Stoney Indians reservation. Past the Western border is Canmore, Alberta before reaching Banff National Park.
