According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,300 km² (888 mi²). 2,260 km² (873 mi²) of it is land and 39 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.71% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 97.93% White, 0.15% Black or African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 0.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,452 households out of which 29.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.70% are married couples living together, 8.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% are non-families. 26.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.93.
