Meurthe-et-Moselle is a French département, named after the Meurthe and Moselle rivers.
Meurthe-et-Moselle was created in 1871 at the end of Franco-Prussian War from territories of Moselle and Meurthe départements which remained to France.
The current limit between Meurthe-et-Moselle and Moselle was the border of France and Germany from 1871 to 1919.
Meurthe-et-Moselle belong to the Lorraine région. It is bordered by the départements: Meuse, Vosges, Bas-Rhin and Moselle and by the Luxembourg and Belgium countries. It's dimensions are 130 km from north to south and between 7 and 103 km from west to east.
Other important towns are Longwy, Pont-à-Mousson, Villerupt.
