Nakba is an Arabic term meaning cataclysm or calamity.

The term is often used amongst Arabs to describe the so called Palestinian exodus which resulted from the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. During the course of the war, about 700,000 Palestinians fled from villages and cities in the area which eventually became the State of Israel. Most have never been allowed to return. The land they left behind was seized by the Israeli government.
