Newfie

"Newfie" is a slang term used in Canada for a person from Newfoundland and Labrador.

The term is primarily used in "Newfie jokes", the typical Canadian ethnic joke (akin to Polish jokes in the U.S. or Belgian jokes in France). To understand the nature of Newfie jokes, consider the analogy that Newfie jokes are to many Canadians what Redneck jokes are to Americans. Given this, then perhaps the Canadian equivalent of Jeff Foxworthy would be Buddy Wasisname.

While the term is commonly used in a derogatory sense by those not from Newfoundland, many Newfoundlanders use the term with pride amongst themselves, not taking offense to it when used without intention to insult. However, the term "Newf" when used, is almost always derogatory, espically when used by a Non-Newfie.
