Northamptonshire (abbreviated Northants) is a county in central England with a population of 629,676 (2001 census). It has borders with Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Cambridgeshire (inc. Peterborough), Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire (inc. Milton Keynes), Oxfordshire and England's shortest county boundary (19 metres) with Lincolnshire. The name can be abbreviated to "Northants", and the county town is Northampton.
The Soke of Peterborough was historically associated with Northamptonshire.
