Nuclear Dimorphism

A feature unique to ciliates, nuclear dimorphism occurs when a single cell contains two functionally distinct types of nuclei, the micronucleus and the macronucleus.

The micronucleus is specialized for sexual reproduction, whereas the macronucleus is specialized for transcription.
