Redcar and Cleveland is a unitary authority in the former county of Cleveland, consisting of Redcar, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Guisborough, and some hinterland. The area was historically part of Yorkshire. It had a resident population of 139,132 in 2001, and is represented in Parliament by the barrister Vera Baird (Labour).

The district was created in 1974 as Langbaurgh, after the ancient wapentake of Yorkshire. It was renamed as Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council when it became a unitary authority on April 1, 1996.
