South Gloucestershire is a local government area in South West England. It was created in 1996 when the county of Avon was abolished, by the merger of the districts of Kingswood and Northavon. The district borders the city of Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

South Gloucestershire lies within the traditional and ceremonial county of Gloucestershire.

It is home to the eastern ends of the two famous Severn bridges which are the main route by road to and from South Wales. A small part of the Cotswolds and the National Trust site Dyrham Park are also in the county.
