Swale is a local government district in Kent, England. Its council is based in Sittingbourne. The borough is named for the narrow channel called The Swale, possibly named because of the low-lying swampland on either side (see below), that separates the mainland of Kent from the Isle of Sheppey.

A swale is also a low portion of land that is often wet[1]. It is often deliberately contoured into the land for storm water management. Eavestroughs empty into swales which direct the rainwater away from building foundations. The swales allows the rainwater to soak into the ground. Swales are often placed at property line boundaries.
