Venice Arsenal
The Venice Arsenal in Venice, Italy was a shipyard that apparently produced nearly one ship every day, in what was effectively the world's first factory. Founded in 1104, its area was tripled in 1303, extended further in 1325, and again in 1473. At its height, the Arsenal employed 16,000 people. The idea of interchangeable parts was first developed at the Arsenal, where ships were produced using pre-manufactured parts, assembly lines, and mass production.
