Chemistry [kem'-ihs-tree] is the science about elements and compounds, and how these work together. It is the study of the materials that make up our bodies and the world around us.

As a true science, chemistry began its scientific study during the 1600s. This is when chemists discovered the simple substances that make up all other substances. These simple substances are called elements.

A chemical compound is a substance which is made up of two or more elements.
