An operating system is the software that lets a computer run applications. The type of operating system best for a computer often depends upon the work a computer will do. There are some operating systems that can be made to run on many different kinds of computers.

Some well known operating systems include : Apple's Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Solaris. You can also see a list of operating systems.
